Reconnecting with Food
As I pursued the art unit “Seeds – Patterns in Nature”, I thought about the packaging that comes with food these days. As students were busily curating seed pods for sketching, I decided to do a little experiment on my own. Modern life conveniences, the need for efficiency, the compact lifestyle of Hong Kong make it far too easy to embrace the fast culture. I was therefore compelled to see if I could sprout the seeds that I find in my school lunch…If successful, it would be great encouragement for students to try at home!

School’s Rooftop Gardens
A keen interest in the school’s rooftop gardens was taken this year. Students can sign up to help out with the gardens and noting is sweeter than seeing their wonder when seeds germinate and push through the soil. I’ve enjoyed summer salads from their work on the rooftop and this year, I’ve taken a special interest in the other vegetables grown. The gardens are quiet now as the students are away at home eLearning; but life, as the gardens show, continue on. As a next project, and to celebrate when students return; a school’s recipe book will be made with recipes shared by students using the produce from the school’s gardens.

Lemons from lemons tea
12 seeds were carefully extracted, cleaned, and left on a wet tissue. After a week, a few germinated and were placed in soil. A month has now passed and three have pushed through and looking solid. There’s a definite sense of child-like delight with each new leaf…though it’ll be quite some time before lemons really grow.

Apples from snack time
Have been enjoying the small gala apples from New Zealand, and so decided to see if they can be sprouted. The same process with sprouting lemons were followed, seeds were extracted and soaked in a wet towel. Once they germinated, they were transfer to pot and soil. They started off well, but sadly they’re wilting and think this experiment will fail.

Chillies from the chilli soy sauce
Was making chilli soy sauce to go with some homemade dumplings. Again, some seeds were carefully extracted and cleaned and soaked in a wet paper towel. They were later transferred to pot and soil and they have growing fast!

Tomatoes from the sandwich
While making some tomato cheese sandwiches, some seeds were taken and carefully washed and soaked. They sprouted quickly but were so thin and fragile. Unfortunately, they didn’t last after transferring to the a pot.
